Cargo Drones
Cargo drones carry freight where roads are slow, long or missing. Compare uncrewed aircraft from Dronamics, Elroy Air, Pyka and Drone Delivery Canada, from compact delivery drones to large fixed-wing freighters.

Buying advice
Classify the aircraft before planning approvals
Before any talk of approvals, pin down exactly what kind of aircraft you are buying. ISO 21895:2026 sets characteristics for classifying and grading civil uncrewed aircraft, which can be used alone or in combination and apply across the aircraft's life from development to maintenance. Ask each maker to describe its aircraft in those terms and in the categories your own aviation authority uses. Then ask which approvals it already holds, in which countries, and which ones you would need as the operator. An aircraft approved elsewhere may still face a long process in your airspace, so build that into your timeline.
Write the operations manual with the maker
Commercial drone freight is an operation first and an aircraft second. ISO 21384-3:2026 sets requirements for safe commercial uncrewed aircraft operations, including the external service that provides the command and control link. Ask each maker who supplies that link on your routes, by satellite or ground network, and what the aircraft does if the link drops. Ask for sample procedures covering cargo loading and weighing, weather limits, emergency landing sites and handover at the far end. A maker with a tested operations manual can shorten your own drafting and show your regulator that the procedures have been used before.
Cost the ground operation, not just the airframe
At our last update in October 2026, the Drone Delivery Canada Sparrow was the lowest-priced listing here at about $80,000, while the Elroy Air Chaparral topped the page at about $500,000, and not one was quote-only. Add the ground control station, remote pilots and their training, a launch and landing site with any runway or pad works, hangar space, maintenance tooling, insurance and link fees. Ask whether the maker offers flights as a service while you build your own capability, and compare that with ownership over the period you expect to run the route. Check, too, how quickly a damaged aircraft can be repaired or replaced, since one airframe out of service may halt a route.
What to look for
- Payload and range together, as one usually limits the other
- Take-off and landing needs: runway, landing pad or vertical take-off
- Aviation approvals required for your routes and airspace
Common questions
Do cargo drones need permission to fly?
Typically, yes. Commercial cargo flights usually need approval from the national aviation authority, and requirements grow with aircraft size and route. Plan for this early in any project.
What loads can a cargo drone carry?
Capacity varies widely, from small parcels on compact drones to much larger freight on bigger aircraft. Check each listing for payload and range, and share your typical load when you request a quote.
